New Year, New Masterclass: Reading George Herbert’s Poems Today
'I live and write...and relish versing': Reading George Herbert's Poems Today
1-5pm, Tuesday 15th January 2013
8 Hop Gardens, London, WC2N 4EH
We're just over a week into the New Year, and to get 2013 off to a real Readerly start the first Masterclass of the year is taking place this coming Tuesday, 15th January in London. None other than The Reader Organisation's Director Jane Davis will be leading the Masterclass, which will be all about exploring the poetry of George Herbert. Any Shared Reading Facilitators who have completed Read to Lead are eligible to sign up to this Masterclass.
And now in age I bud again,
After so many deaths I live and write;
I once more smell the dew and rain,
And relish versing: O my only light,
It cannot be
That I am he
On whom thy tempests fell all night.(The Flower)
George Herbert is one of the greatest English poets, and his subject matter - inner conflict - deeply resonates today, so long as 'God' does not prevent a secular reader from attempting to enter the poems. In this Masterclass, Jane Davis will share some of her favourite George Herbert poems and lead a discussion about the necessity and means of translating human experience from the language of a past culture to that of our own.
These special sessions are one of the main components of The Reader Organisation's Ongoing Learning provision, exclusively for those who have completed the Read to Lead course and wish to improve their practice as a facilitator and deepen their understanding as a reader.Masterclasses are free for the first 12 months after completion of Read to Lead. Following this they are £25 for a half-day session.
A few places are still available for January's Masterclass - why not welcome in the year with a dose of hearty shared reading? To sign up, please contact Roisin Hyland, Literary Learning Coordinator,on roisinhyland@thereader.org.uk or 0151 207 7207, stating the date and location of the Read to Lead course you completed.
